ELECTRICAL FAULT FINDING

Something has tripped, gone dead or started flickering. Here is what to do.

From £102 including VAT, first hour included. NAPIT registered, faults explained in plain English, across Goole, Howden, Selby and the villages between.

Ring me, tell me what is happening, and I will tell you whether it can wait, whether there is something safe you can try, or whether I need to come out. Most faults are found and fixed in the first visit.

Before you ring

Two things worth trying first

It saves you money if you can tell me what you found.

If the whole board has tripped

Switch every circuit breaker off, turn the main switch back on, then switch the breakers on one at a time. The one that trips it again tells us where the problem is.

If one circuit keeps tripping, unplug everything on it and try again. If it holds, one of the appliances is the fault, not the wiring.

If you smell burning or a socket is warm, turn it off at the board and ring. That one is not a wait-until-Friday job.

What it costs

From £102 inc. VAT, and you know before I carry on

From £102 including VAT

No out of hours service

All prices include VAT. If it is a quick fix I do it there and then. Ring 01904 599 109 and tell Nathan or me what is happening.

The usual suspects

Faults I deal with every week

Every one of these is a real situation from the last few months. If yours is not on the list, ring anyway.

The RCD trips and will not reset

Usually a damp outside socket, a faulty appliance, a heating element on its way out, or a damaged cable. I test each circuit rather than guessing.

A run of sockets is dead but nothing has tripped

Often a loose connection at a socket or junction box, or a broken ring. These are the ones people live with for months.

Lights flicker or bulbs keep blowing

A loose neutral, a failing dimmer, or a fitting that is not rated for the lamp. Occasionally something at the supply, which I can identify and report.

Burning smell, warm socket, scorch marks

Turn it off at the board and ring. This one is not a wait-until-Friday job.

A fault that comes and goes

The hardest kind. I will tell you honestly if it needs monitoring rather than a single visit, and what that costs.

Why us

Why people ring us when something has gone wrong

We answer the phone

Most calls are taken by Nathan, who knows the work and can usually tell you on the call whether it needs a visit.

One electrician, start to finish

The work is done by Matt. You get a text when I am on the way, every time.

We test, we do not guess

Insulation resistance, continuity, RCD operation, and a proper look inside the board and the affected accessories.

Fixed, not just found

If the fix is something I can do on the day, I do it. I carry the common parts.

“Friendly super efficient and went out of his way to ensure we had our power supply sorted really quickly.”

On the day

What happens on the day

1

Before I touch anything

I ask what you have noticed and when it started. That narrows it down before the tools come out.

2

While I am there

I test rather than guess. The power goes off briefly for testing; I will tell you before I do it and keep it short.

3

Before I leave

I show you what I found and explain it without jargon. If it is fixable there and then, it is fixed. If not, you get a written price and a date.

Where we work

Goole, Howden, Selby and the villages between

Most weeks I am in Goole, Howden, Selby and the villages around them. Fault visits further out only if I can fit them in sensibly, and I will say so on the phone.

York and the corridor towards it for planned work. Not sure if you are in range? Ring and ask.

Questions

Common questions about faults

Sometimes. Nathan or I will ask a few questions and if it is obviously an appliance or something you can safely check, we will say so rather than book a visit you do not need.

For testing, briefly, yes. I will tell you before I do and keep it short.

Most faults are found within the hour. If yours is intermittent I will explain what the next step is and what it costs before going further.

Usually yes for a day or two, unless there is a burning smell or heat. If in doubt, ring.

Both, wherever the fix is something I can do on the day. I carry the common parts.

For any new work or replacement of a circuit accessory that needs it, yes. For a simple repair you get a written note of what was done.

Sometimes an old board is the reason a fault has not been caught sooner, and sometimes it is fine. I will tell you which, and I do not push upgrades that are not needed.

Get in touch

Tell us what is happening

A sentence or two is plenty: what has stopped working, when it started, and whether anything trips. Nathan or I come back to you within one working day.

Prefer to talk? Ring 01904 599 109. Most calls are taken by Nathan, who can usually price a straightforward board change over the phone.
