A full rewire is a big job, and it is worth being straight about it before you ring anyone. Below is what is actually involved, why we do not take these on in the traditional way, and what we do instead.
What a full rewire actually means
Every circuit in the property replaced: cables, back boxes, sockets, switches, and often the consumer unit too.
Floors up, walls chased, plaster made good afterwards. Most of a house is unusable room by room while it happens, and it is days rather than hours.
It is not something to take on lightly, and a good electrician will tell you plainly whether you actually need one before quoting for it.
An EICR often answers the question first. Many properties people worry need a rewire actually just need certain circuits or the consumer unit replacing. An inspection tells you which, in writing, before any work starts.
Why we don't take on traditional rewires
It's not that we won't. It's that it's already outdated
- Traditional wiring ties every switch to one job for life. Want it to do something different later? That means chasing walls again, not reprogramming a system.
- It runs full 240V out to every switch on the wall when it does not need to. A digital system keeps mains power at the point of use and sends the switch itself a safe low-voltage signal instead, which is inherently safer.
- It is not built to move with how a home actually gets used now: no remote diagnostics, no scene setting, no way to bring heating, security or CCTV into one system without opening the walls again.
- It is not even the money-saver people assume. Going digital does not cost considerably more, it is just offered less because fewer electricians are set up to do it.
We do the hard part. You get the easy life.
- One system runs your heating, lighting and mood settings, so you stop juggling switches and thermostats that don't talk to each other
- Something not right? We can usually see it and fix it by remote programming, often before you have even noticed
- Forgot to turn something off? Check it, change it or switch it off from your phone, wherever you are

Signs it might not be a rewire after all
Most of the properties people ring us about a rewire for do not actually need one. Here is what the real problem usually turns out to be.
Often a handful of tired circuits or connections, not the whole house. Usually fault finding, sometimes a partial rewire of just the affected circuits.
That is a consumer unit upgrade, not a rewire. It brings the safety up to today’s standard without touching the cables in the walls.
An EICR tells you exactly what state the wiring is in, with every finding explained, before anyone recommends a rewire.
Usually what is asked for is an EICR, not a rewire. We can tell you which one you actually need over the phone.

Common questions about rewires
Do you do full house rewires?
Not in the traditional sense, no. If you want one done to a digital standard using Velbus smart wiring, we will happily talk it through.
What is a digital rewire?
The same cabling work as a standard rewire, but wired to work with Velbus: lighting scenes, zoned heating and switching that can be reconfigured through the system rather than only at the wall.
Why don't you do traditional rewires?
It is not that we will not, it is that traditional wiring is dated technology. Every switch is hard-wired to one job for life, and it runs full 240V out to the wall when it does not need to. A digital rewire with Velbus smart wiring does the same job more safely and does not cost considerably more to do.
I don't know if I need a rewire or something smaller. Can you tell me?

How much does a digital rewire cost?
It depends entirely on the property and what you want it to do, so there is no fixed starting price. You get a written quote after a proper look, never a guess over the phone.
