Charger playing up, or fitted by someone who has gone quiet?
NAPIT registered. DNO notifications handled. Faults on Hypervolt, Zappi, Ohme, Easee, Wallbox, Pod Point and Tesla units. 12 month guarantee on our work.
Most of the EV work I get asked to do now is not new installations. It is chargers that trip, chargers that have gone offline, chargers that were fitted without the right protection, and homes the national installers have looked at and walked away from. That is the work I want.
Charger faults, remedials and the installs others turn down
Three situations cover most of what comes in.
Sometimes it is the charger. More often it is what is behind it: the RCD type, the earthing arrangement, a loose connection in the isolator, or a cable run that was never sized for the load. I test the circuit properly rather than swapping parts and hoping.
If you have had a charger installed and the company has stopped answering, or you have been told at an EICR that the install is not right, I will inspect it, tell you plainly what is wrong, and put it right. I will give you a certificate for the work I do.
Long cable runs, detached garages, older fuse boards that need upgrading first, looped supplies, three-phase, tenants and landlords. These get turned down by the call centres because they do not fit the script. They are normal jobs to me.
A charger sorted properly, even when it takes a few visits
Straight talking.
Most people ringing about an EV charger have already had one company promise a date and not turn up, or a call centre give them a canned answer that does not fit their house.
I test the circuit before I touch the charger, tell you honestly what I find, and give you a straight price before anything else happens.
The work is done by Matt. You get a text when I am on the way, and I will not leave without explaining what has been done and what, if anything, still needs sorting.
“Mat came to sort our EV charger, it was here when we moved in to this house. He was fantastic, came 4 times until we sorted it out.”
“I recently had a new fuse box fitted along with an EV charger installation, and I couldn’t be happier with the service. He was friendly, easy to talk to, and very knowledgeable, taking the time to explain everything clearly and answer any questions I had. The work was completed to a high standard, everything was finished in a single day, and he left the place clean and tidy afterwards. It’s great to find someone who’s honest, reliable, and takes pride in his work. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone needing electrical work.”
What EV work costs
From £102 inc. VAT
- Covers travel and up to an hour on site
- Enough to test the circuit and tell you what is wrong
- If the fix is quick, I usually do it there and then
- If it needs parts or a return visit, you get a price first
Remedial work
- Priced after the inspection, in writing
- Covers putting right what someone else fitted badly
- No work starts until you have agreed the price
New installations
- Priced individually after a look at the job, not a fixed figure
- If a national installer would do it cheaper, I will say so
- I can help most with the installs they turn down
If you have a quote from Octopus or a manufacturer network for a straightforward install, they will probably beat me on price and I will tell you so. Where I can help is the install they would not do, or would not do properly.
The order is real
Send a photo
Send a photo of the charger, the fault light or the error on the app, and a photo of your fuse board. WhatsApp is easiest.
You hear back fast
Nathan or I come back to you within one working day with either a straight answer or a booked visit.
On the day
I test the circuit and the charger, explain what I find in plain English, and fix what can be fixed. You get a certificate for any work carried out, and the DNO is notified where the job needs it.
Common questions about EV chargers
My charger keeps tripping the RCD. Is the charger faulty?
Usually not. The most common causes are a Type AC RCD that is not suitable for EV charging, a neutral-earth fault on the charger's supply, or a damp connection outside. A proper test finds which.
Another electrician fitted it. Will you touch it?
Yes. I will inspect it, tell you what I find, and certify the work I do. I will not certify somebody else's installation as a whole.
Do you need to notify anyone?
Charger installs and some remedials need a DNO notification, and new circuits are notifiable to Building Control. I handle both as part of the job.
Can you fit a charger if my fuse board is old?
Often the fuse board needs upgrading first, and that is the part the national installers walk away from. I can do both, and I will tell you whether you actually need the upgrade or not.
Do you cover my area?
Goole, Howden, Selby and the villages between most weeks. York and the corridor towards it for planned work. If you are further out, ring and I will be honest about whether it is a sensible trip.
Can you help with the app or the tariff?
I will get the charger online and talk you through the basics. Tariff choice is between you and your energy supplier.
Do you do three-phase or commercial chargers?
Yes for small commercial and workplace installs. Ring to talk it through.
Tell us about the charger
Tell us the charger brand, what it is doing, and roughly when it started. A photo helps too.
Prefer to talk? Ring 01904 599 109. Most calls are taken by Nathan, who can usually give you a straight answer over the phone.
Other things I can help with
Fuse board upgrades
If the report shows the board is the problem, a modern consumer unit with RCD protection.
Electrical fault finding
Something tripped, gone dead or started flickering? Same approach: test properly, explain plainly.
EICRs and certificates
A report on the whole installation, with anything dangerous made safe before we leave.
Send me a photo and I will tell you what you are looking at
Ring and speak to someone who knows the work, or send a photo on WhatsApp.
Mon to Fri, 8:30 to 5. Nathan usually answers.
